Alice Jennex is a Nova Scotia–based visual artist whose watercolour paintings explore relationship through colour, gesture, and embodied experience.

Working across figuration and abstraction, Jennex uses watercolour’s fluidity and transparency to explore the ways bodies, environments, and people affect one another. Through layered washes, staining, diffusion, and accumulation, colour meets, blends and shifts—allowing forms, boundaries and atmospheres to emerge through the painting process.

Her practice is rooted in lived and embodied experience. Earlier bodies of work used self-portraiture to explore emotion, memory and the body directly. More recently, experiences of motherhood and matrescence have shifted her attention toward relationship: touch and distance, closeness and separation, and the less visible ways we are shaped by our encounters with others. Abstraction has become an extension of this inquiry—a space where sensation and relationship can be felt rather than explained.

Born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Jennex studied painting at NSCAD University and at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally and includes solo exhibitions, artist residencies and large-scale public art projects. She has participated in residencies in the Cape Breton Highlands and on Toronto Island and is currently a member of the 2026–27 Kinhouse Artist Cohort. Her work has been featured in publications including CBC Arts, Vogue House & Garden, Arts to Hearts, and Women United Art Magazine.

Jennex is currently developing a new body of abstract watercolour paintings from her studio in Nova Scotia, continuing her exploration of colour as a site of contact, transformation and relation.
